Hi. I am Joanne Guiste from the Nature Isle Dominica.

What made you go natural? How long have you been natural?
I have been natural for a little over two years now. I went back natural because I wanted my hair to get back to it’s healthy state. After my experience with excessive shedding and scalp pains I felt it was time

Describe your hair. (texture, behavior, thickness, etc)
My hair is …. my crown. It is thick and kinky and unruly at times but I love it.

What is your monthly routine for caring for your hair? (What products and practices do you use?)
I wash every week (except when wearing a protective style) .. I deep condition once a month and do a hot oil treatment once a month. I use the Shea Moisture brand of products but my holy grail is Castor oil and my DIY shea/cocoa butter cream. I moisturize using the LOC method.. I use the Shea Moisture JBCO leave in, castor oil and my shea/cocoa butter cream

What does being natural mean to you?

It means embracing every part of me. It means being able to love my hair more and more everyday in its own “naturalness” and uniqueness. And it means having my daughter see that I embrace my hair as it is so that she can embrace hers too

Do you use any heat on your hair? (Why or why not?)

No.. I have not used any heat for fear that it may damage my hair, but hopefully this year might be the year I get over that fear and try my first blow dry hahaha

Do you do any protective styling? If so how often and what are some of your favorite styles?

I love twists… I love them in updos or just mini twists. I try my best to put them in at least once a month

What is the hardest part about being natural? What is your favorite thing about being natural?

The hardest part is sticking to a nightly routine… It is very exhausting but the results are worth it so I try to stick to it.
My favorite thing about being natural is that I can do soooo much with my hair.. The thickness allows for me to do various styles and gives me the opportunity to experiment and try new styles all the time

What is your favorite hairstyle?

I would have to say twists. Because twists are a versatile hairstyle and can be transformed into a number of other styles

Who is/are your hair crush(s)?

When I got up to speed with the whole natural hair “movement” my hair crush was Naptural85 but now I would have to say I don’t have no one person. I admire so many women with their different hair textures that I have just grown to love natural hair in general no matter who is wearing it.

Do you have any funny hair stories? What’s the most outrageous thing someone has said about your kinks?

* pause for a moment to think*… I don’t think I have any funny stories but the most outrageous thing someone has said about my hair is “where did you buy your hair piece?” I was wearing a puff that day so I guess the person thought it was one of those store bought puffs hahaha

What is one piece of advice you have for other people who want to start embracing their kinks?

Your hair is uniquely yours. Embrace it and love it
