5 Essential Back to School/Work Makeup Tips #MelaninMonday

Summer has ended…its time to say goodbye to lazing on the beach and waking up at noon and hello to work and school alike.

Thankfully whether you are going to school or to work we’ve put together 5 makeup tips that we feel like anyone can benefit from.

1 Shape your eyebrows!

Eyebrows are one of a person’s most prominent facial features because of the many functions they perform. They help accentuate the eyes, shape the face, and play a powerful role in communication.

Of course, not everyone is born with perfectly-manicured brows; so to achieve an aesthetically-pleasing look, eyebrows should be routinely trimmed, shaped, and filled.Beautifully-groomed eyebrows are a lesser known anti-aging secret as properly plucked brows can do is give lift to your face and make the eyes appear larger and more youthful.

Without regular maintenance, your eyebrows can appear bushy and unkempt. In contrast, a well-groomed brow can create a polished look that enhances your appearance. Even without a drop of makeup, a woman with well-kept eyebrows will typically appear more clean and refined.

2 A good mascara and some eyeliner is crucial.

Most women  (including me) probably agree that a good mascara is absolutely essential to any beauty routine. There are volumizing, thickening and lengthening formulas; bristle, plastic, curved, and straight wands; ones that declump, ones that purportedly help your lashes grow longer–there are even mascaras that vibrate. All for our using pleasure.

In my opinion mascaras are a marriage of formula and applicator. Brush shape impacts delivery of the formula to the lash, and enables you to reach the smallest lash and to be convenient and easy to use.

Just like hair brushes, different brushes are designed to provide a different styling effect, for mascaras that may mean ‘full charge volume’ or ‘highly defined lashes’.” For volume, look for thicker brushes with denser bristles. In general, brushes with shorter bristles are easier to control.

A crucial tip to remember is to curl the lashes really well, then apply mascara starting from the roots of the top lashes, moving the wand first side to side then upwards toward the end of the lashes. For an even application, put the wand in the mascara tube again before doing the second eye. Then apply a conservative amount of mascara and let it dry completely before applying another coat. Use as many coats as you feel comfortable with.

One of my faves is the Miss Manga Lash by L’oreal!

When it comes to eyeliner its important to remember that eyeliner is a must for people with small eyes. With eyeliner, even the smallest eyes can appear large. Applying eyeliner requires some technique though. The line drawn should not be too dark and harsh.

There are various types of eyeliner in the stores nowadays. The 3 types are namely liquid eyeliner, pencil eyeliner and gel type eyeliner.

All three types of eyeliners work in the same way just that the liquid and gel type is less hassle-free in the sense that you need not sharpen your eyeliner.

First, choose the type of eyeliner you wish to work on. Normally I recommend the liquid eyeliner as the fine tip makes it easier for beginners to draw the eye line.

Hold the skin of your upper lid taut. Apply the liquid eyeliner starting from the inside corner of the eye to outward. Try to apply a light stroke.

If you are a beginner on using eyeliner, you may face difficulties in drawing a nice line through. In that case, you may wish to split your line into two sections. Draw from the inner corner of the eye to the middle and then finish off from the middle to the end.

Remember to keep your line as near to the lash line as possible to create a natural look.

A fave of mine is the Jordana FabLiner

3 concealer is your best friend

Concealer is one of the most important make-up products to have in your make-up bag (trust me on this). It not only conceals blemishes  but If you use a concealer and set it in place using a loose powder, you will achieve a much fresher more youthful appearance to your face.

Concealers come in six different forms: stick, creamy liquid, cream, matte-finish, matte-finish cream-to-powder, and ultra-matte liquid concealers, which blend on smoothly and creamily and dry quickly into an unmovable layer.

Concealer is also a major key in removing darkness around the eye area and the eyes look more awake and younger.

For light darkness around eyes, just apply a concealer that is one shade lighter than your natural complexion. If your dark circles are really prominent, a peach concealer is your best bet. For us dark skinned beauties darkness can be cancelled  by applying a peach concealer/corrector on the darkness and top up with a brightening concealer one shade lighter than your natural skin tone.ea.

When you shop for an effective concealer, it is critical that the concealer be the same basic, natural skin tone as your foundation, only one or two shades lighter. That way you can be assured that the foundation and concealer will blend together under the eye. If you choose a concealer that is a very different color than your foundation, you will simply end up with a third color where they overlap and intersect.Apply the concealer first and then the foundation. You can apply your concealer in a small arc around the inside corner of the eye or, for a more ‘beat to the gawds’ look, you can apply concealer in a sweep under the entire eye and out on the upper cheekbone. Blend this out evenly, taking care not to spread concealer onto areas where you don’t want it.

Be sure to use a pat-and-blend method of application, as this will ensure that the concealer covers where it is supposed to and is not inadvertently wiped away. The foundation is then applied lightly over this area and blended out over the face.  It is important to always blend the edge of the concealer away from the eye until it disappears.

When you wish to wear as little makeup as possible (which is important if you are in high school) , try using only a minimal amount of concealer that is closer to your true skin tone than the concealer you normally use. Or try a lighter shade of foundation than you normally wear, and apply it only in the under-eye area.

This can make a world of difference in making you look rested and polished, but not made up. Again, the trick is to blend extremely well so that there is no discernible edge between the concealer area and the part of the face where there is no makeup.

Of course a fave of mine is the la girl concealer!

4 A little Highlight Never hurt nobody.

I am OBSESSED with highlight. Basically, highlighter is face makeup that attracts light, creating the illusion of brightness and height, hence that lit-from-within look.

Highlighter is a product that can completely change your beauty look. If applied correctly, it gives you that glowing look where people can’t place what’s different, just that you look amazing. The goal when applying highlighter is to get a reflective dewy look that makes you look like you just moisturized your skin.

There are three main areas you should apply highlighter: the cheekbones and temples, the eyes, and the Cupid’s bow.

When applying it to your cheeks, blend it on the highest point of your cheekbone and up towards your temple. This is especially important if you’re doing any contouring as it will draw attention away from the makeup-made shadows. When applying it to your eyes, blend it underneath the eyebrow on the brow bone and into the inner crease. The lightness on the inner crease will open up your eyes and the brow bone

When applying it to your eyes, blend it underneath the eyebrow on the brow bone and into the inner crease. The lightness on the inner crease will open up your eyes and the brow bone contouring will give you a brow lift effect.

Applying highlighter to your lips is less common but can reap great results. Before applying your lipstick, blend some highlighter in the Cupid’s bow and underneath the bottom lip. This will look silly when you do it, but once you’ve applied your lip color, only a touch of the highlighter will show through, giving your lipstick a multi-dimensional color effect.

You can also apply it to the bridge of the nose if it’s one of your favorite features but be careful not to apply it all the way to the tip as you’ll look shiny rather than contoured.

The Bh Cosmetics Wild & Radiant -Baked Illuminating & Bronzing Palette is one of my all time fave highlights!

5 Your lip gloss must be both cool and popping.

Serving as one of THE most popular and handy cosmetic product,  lip gloss rules the world of makeup.
If you want to give your lips a shine and plumpness that you’ve never had before the gloss is a must.
Although lipsticks are in demand, these new lip care products have created their own place in the market. Particularly, if you are among those who want a quick simple, yet attractive and appealing look then you need the gloss.
Available in various colors, the moisturizing and dazzling effects not only make your lips beautiful by adding light natural  color but also make it soft and smooth by giving that moisturizing effect.
Just like lipstick, lip gloss also comes in different forms. You can find lip gloss of numerous colors and even in different fruity flavors. For smoothening and softening your lips, apply lip balm. To highlight your beautiful lips, apply moisturizing lip gloss.
Lip gloss can be used as a part of makeup, to give color to your lips, or as a moisturizer to hydrate your lips. The basic ingredients in most lip gloss are glycerin, aloe, and vitamin E. All the ingredients of lip gloss help in moisturizing the lips. There is another kind of lip gloss that is basically used to give shiny effect to the lips. Apart from the usual ingredients, this type of lip gloss also contains certain oils.
Lip gloss has many more benefits, even more than petroleum jelly or any other lip products. Apart from giving a soft and smooth touch to the lips, lip gloss also makes them shiny. During hot weather, lip gloss can protect the lips from getting dry and chapped. What’s more, some of the lip glosses available today makes the lips look plump, thereby helping it to appear bold and beautiful.
Its so hard to chose a fave but I would have to say the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Lip Gloss, in Soft Nude!
